Use the Classic block

The Classic block replicates the familiar editing experience from WordPress’s classic editor within the modern block editor. In this guide, you will learn how to add, use, and convert Classic blocks.

To add a Classic block, follow these steps:

1. From your site’s dashboard, edit the content you want to add the Classic block to.
2. Click the + block inserter (plus icon) and search for “Classic”.
   • Or, type /classic wherever you see “Type / to choose a block” to use a shortcut.
3. Click the Classic block icon.

4. Start typing or paste your content directly into the block.

Once you add the block, you can edit the text you add as you would in the classic editor, using the tools provided.

Edit the content in the Classic block by following these steps:

1. Click the Classic block. You will edit the content of the Classic block in one of two ways:
   • You will edit directly in the block.
   • Or, you will click the Edit option in the block toolbar. When you’ve made your edits, click the Save button to go back to the page/post editor.
2. Use the toolbar to apply formatting or add media.

Converting Classic block content into individual blocks provides you with access to more advanced formatting and layout options. To convert a Classic block to individual blocks, follow these steps:

1. Click on the Classic block you want to convert.
2. In the block toolbar that appears, click the “Convert to blocks” icon.

3. The content will be converted to individual blocks. For example, each paragraph in your Classic block will be converted into individual Paragraph blocks.
4. Adjust any individual block settings or styles.
