Developing empathy

- Since 2017, national surveys conducted by the benefits technology company Businessolver have found that over 90% of employees, HR professionals, and CEOs have ranked empathy as a top value in the workplace. In fact, over 85% of CEOs agree that a company's financial performance is tied to the level of empathy it shows to their employees. Empathy helps build community and guides the culture of an organization, especially for newcomers. If we want to show cultural humility, we cannot do it without empathy. Let me give you an example. A new employee attends her first meeting where technical and in-group acronyms are dropped constantly. Quickly, she has trouble following and she tries to write down some of the terms so she can ask for clarification later. But, would she seem too unprepared if she did ask? Should a leader of the group, or for that matter, any member of the group, send her a list of the terminology used…
