Idle games allow players to continue achieving progress and completing objectives even when they are not actively playing the game. These games often use automation systems where players set up instructions of what needs to be accomplished or they feature long cooldowns associated with actions. Regardless of the approach, once an instruction or action is received, players aren’t required to do anything but wait until that action or instruction is completed. Progress towards goals is then achieved over time, and oftentimes happening even when the game is not currently loaded and running.

Some of the most common genres of games that heavily rely on idling systems include Clicker games, where players have to first manually click or tap in order to generate currency but then are able to automate this process and increase efficiency, and strategic management games, where players select facilities to build and are required to wait over a period of time before having them completed without being required to actively be invested in the building process.

While not specifically Idle games, many RPG and Puzzle games also feature idle systems, such as the popular Auto-Play mode seen in most Free-To-Play games of these genres. Auto-play like features allow players to speed-up gameplay by making it so that actions such as completing puzzles or fighting against enemies are automatically performed by an in-game AI and at a higher speed, instead of manually by the player. These features are appealing to players that prefer to focus on other aspects of the game, such as planning the overall game strategy, setting up goals, managing resources, progressing through the narrative, and/or enjoying porn rewards such as fully animated sex scenes.
