Side scrollers are 2D games characterized by the horizontal nature that playable characters traverse through stages. In these games, the playable character is often located at the same particular point of interest, usually the center or the corners of the screen, while the world surrounding them “scrolls” horizontally either to the left or to the right as they move. While some games may make use of 3D elements to visually represent characters and other in-game elements, due to the predominantly side camera view of these games, side scroller games have little to no tri-dimensionality.

Common genres that often make use of side scrolling include Platformers, Beat’em Up and Shoot’em Up.
