Players often control a single unit and have to face a horde of small enemies while progressing through the stage before facing a boss at the end of it.

Nowadays, one of the most popular styles of Shoot ‘Em Up games are Bullet Hell games: these games are characterized by being notoriously difficult, with enemies constantly showering players with bullets and other projectiles, challenging players’ reflexes, pattern identification, and memorization in order to know how to avoid being hit.
