Contemporary firearms are often featured in these games, along with other real ranged weapons, such as bows and crossbows, and fantasy weapons, such as magical staffs or spells. A similar genre of games that features most of the same gameplay elements, but instead focus mostly on close combat weapons, is instead categorized as a First-Person Action game.

A growingly popular subgenre of Shooters and that is often featured as FPS games are Hero Shooters. In these games, each playable character has unique special abilities that they can rely on in addition to their weapons. These games often borrow many of the same elements of MOBA games, being predominantly competitive multiplayer team-based games where players are looking to fill particular roles through their special character’s ability in order to assist their team to victory.
