A subgenre of RPG, Turn Based RPG games are characterized by gameplay where actions conducted by characters don’t happen in real time. Additionally, these games often require less dexterity in order to be played, as gameplay revolves around players selecting instructions that characters need to follow. For example, instead of having to manually perform a combination of control commands in order to accomplish a move, players instead select from a list of predefined and customizable instructions by using only a few (or single) buttons. The in-game character then executes the instructions that were provided, often without need for any further inputs from the player.

The characteristics of this gameplay style which focus less on physical prowess makes it so that these games are more easily accessible to a wider audience. While some games of this genre are notoriously difficult, game complexity greatly varies on a game-by-game basis, with some titles being more Casual while others may require more advanced strategy in order for players to succeed and achieve game objectives.

Most traditional JRPG games fall under this category of gameplay, with western RPG games instead often favoring more active real-time gameplay in the form of Action RPGs.
