Defining a network and its benefits

(upbeat instrumental music) - [Instructor] We know that a network interconnects two or more devices, but what benefits does that really give us? Let's take a look at a few. First, a network gives us the ability to share resources. For example, several employees in an office, they might need to share a common set of files located on a file server or maybe share an expensive printer that lives nearby. Another benefit of networking is communications. And here we're not just talking about email, but things like placing a voice call over a network, and we can do that using a technology called Voice Over IP or VOIP. We can even have video chats, and send instant messages over a network. Yet another benefit is redundancy. If we have critical data stored on a computer acting as a file server for example, what happens if that computer were to break? Or what happens if it's destroyed by fire or flood?
