Create, configure, and manage adaptive scopes

Adaptive scopes in Microsoft Purview are a way to define which content a retention policy should cover using queries instead of fixed lists. Unlike a static scope where you pick a specific mailbox or site, an adaptive scope automatically finds all of the items that match certain conditions and keeps it updated. For example, you could create an adaptive scope for users where department equals HR. This scope will dynamically include all current finance users' mailboxes and OneDrives, and if a new person joins that department, they'll meet the criteria and be included automatically, usually within 24 hours. If someone leaves the department or the attribute changes, then they drop out of the scope. Adaptive scopes essentially self-maintain based on attribute filters, so you aren't manually editing the policy every time organizational changes happen.
