A subgenre of RPGs, these games still feature all the traditional elements found on RPG games, including character customization, character progress, narrative focus, etc., but focus on a more action-centric real time gameplay. Instead of relying on turn-based, where actions happen with each character one move at a time, combat in these games happen with players and enemies alike acting simultaneously. This contributes to combat being more chaotic and requiring more dexterity in order to resolve successfully when compared to traditional turn-based systems.

Action RPG games have been featured in both Western RPG games and also on JRPGs that have steered away from their usual turn-based strategy.
