- [Instructor] Let's talk about the three cloud service models. NIST describes these three as infrastructure as a service, platform as a service, and software as a service. And this course we will occasionally refer to these collectively as the SPI model. Each service model represents a distinct layer differing in expectations of control and responsibility for the cloud service provider and the cloud service consumer. Infrastructure as a service reminds me of going to the market to purchase groceries. Usually, I prefer to shop for raw fruits and vegetables and other items that are not pre-made. When I acquire these items, I need the knowledge and ability to prepare them myself. I cannot expect the store to prepare these items for me, nor do I desire them to do so. A significant business driver for consuming infrastructure as a service is that an organization needs raw compute and storage to manage a diverse, flexible data infrastructure.
